Celebrating 20 Years with Harry Potter
Its the 20th anniversary of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone! Can you believe its been 20 years since Harry met his best friends Ron and Hermione, grab your wand and your party hat, its time to celebrate!
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was first published in 1997 and has sold more than 100 million copies all over the world. Its safe to say that Harry and his friends have a warm place in the heart of book worms and movie lovers across the globe.
Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw …Twenty years ago these magical words and many more flowed from a young writer’s pen. A global phenomenon started and have been enjoyed and loved from every new generation since.
There’s been lots of celebrations going on this week to mark this anniversary. Bolton Town Hall invited local children to come down dressed in Hogwarts uniform, glasses, a wand and a fake scar. They attempted to break the current Guinness World record, which they did, setting a new standard of 676!
Waterstone’s Book store, Fremlin Walk, Maidstone, is holding an anniversary party, hosting lots of fun and games. The fun includes Hunt the Golden Snitch, Guess the Number of Bertie Botts beans in the jar, Owl Racing, design your own house badge and many more activities. A prize goes to the best dressed character from Harry Potter.
Kent libraries are bringing us events at Folkestone library (28th) Cheriton library (29th) Hythe library (30th) with a Hogwarts sorting ceremony, Fantastic Beasts craft activities, treasure hunt and a photo shoot. Please come in a wizardly fancy dress. This event is aimed at 5-11 year olds, on a first come first served basis. For more information please contact staff at Cheriton Library. An exhibition is set to open later this year at the British Library on October 20 to celebrate everything fantastical in Harry’s world, too.
