SOCIAL NETWORKING TO AID RECRUITMENT?
To Facebook or not to Facebook? That is the question
By Earl Street - 9/Jan/2008

A recent report suggests that over two thirds of businesses are blocking social networking sites, such as Facebook and LinkedIn, sa they are seen as a purely time-wasting enterprise.
Take a moment to consider an alternative viewpoint. Increasingly consumers are relying on the internet, social networking sites specifically, to conduct many aspects of their daily life. As a result they increasingly expect to be able to interact with companies through the same media. For a percentage of the working population the internet has become the one-stop-shop for life. From grocery shopping to train timetables, from socialising to job hunting - all are readily available at the click of a button at the users convenience 24/7.
Innovative businesses are embracing social networking sites as another tool for recruitment. Used in a secure way such sites can give a business a competitive advantage. By actively placing themselves in the sphere of interest of potential future employees the companies are not only making themselves accesible to their target audience, they are making a statement about the type of company they are.
On the other hand, this is not something to be taken half-heartedly. If embracing social networking sites is deemed advantageous for your business it is advisable to review your company's internet policy, amongst others.
